Schofield is one of my favorite places to fish. I have many found memories fishing with the family from grandpa's boat. When the kids were little we went at least once a year. The kids also caught crayfish and to cook up for lunch. While catching the little crustaceans some of the kids had memorable encounters with the arthropods. Jessica fell in the lake and was almost eaten by a giant crayfish, Angela was covered with them while sleeping (still having nightmares ?), Richie had a giant one pinch him between the fingers and gave him the shock of his little life (he was about 5 years old) Grandma always caught the biggest fish in the lake. This past week was our first trip to the lake and even though it was cold and the bit was slow I hope all had a good time.
We left Friday about noon and got up to the lake around 2:00 p.m. The weather was nice so we put our tent up and got ready to go fishing. Once on the lake we had a problem locating the fish. We caught at total of 17 fish (2 day total) but compared to what we usually experience the fishing was slow.
Here we are holding up some of the catch of our late afternoon attempt. Dan came up after we arrived without his sweet heart Jessica and little Jacob. It was a good things because it was soooooo very cold at night.
The facilities are really nice at the lake. The complimentary cleaning station makes it easy to take care of our catch.
The fish were large enough to give us beautiful pieces of meat for our outdoor dinner. Eating fish freshly caught is a treat. Great stuff !
Richie wanted to cut some filet so I taught him the finer techniques of disassembling a trout into a culinary delight.
Grandpa G is cleaning his personal filet board. Grandpa is fast and very accurate when cleaning fish.
After cleaning the fish we started a fire and a few of us were a little impatient so we started to roast some hot dogs.
Dan and Richie did not want to eat so while the fish cooked they went down the hill to the lake and caught this tiger trout. Dan released the little guy to get bigger.
Check out the unique patterns.
Grandma and Lynne cooked fish and fried potatoes. Yummy! After eating the fish we roasted some marshmallows and had hot chocolate. It was soooo... cold that we heated rocks and water bottles to place in our sleeping bags. We awoke to everything covered in ice. A big thanks for everyone putting up with the cold and slow fishing. Grandpa had some problems breathing at the high altitude and became very tired but was still able to fish the first day. You will have to ask him about the the big cutthroat trout he caught. It is an interesting story.
